Shotblasting: form of scarification; mechanical process by which the deteriorated or contaminated surface of a concrete slab or surface is removed. Shotblasting is employed on concrete floors to reach a sound substrate upon which new concrete floor coatings, flooring system, or overlays will be placed. Preferred by most General Contractors and Sub-Contractors, shotblasting prepares old floor for new floor coatings, as properly prepared concrete surfaces are most critical for successful concrete floor coatings to adhere. For any floor surface overlay to adhere successfully, the concrete flooring "profile" must be properly created and matched to new floor system. On concrete floors or surfaces requiring either replacement or renewal, to be shot blasted is the contractor's economic choice. Shotblasting (or shot blasting) enables concrete floors by removing thin layer of flooring surface along with imbedded floor contaminants or markings. Shotblasting provides the grip for new concrete floor coatings and systems to adhere. Shotblasting will provide clean, sound concrete, as any overlay on floor surface will not properly adhere if the profile is not matched correctly with new floor system.
