Established in 1958 by Tom and Bernice Stevens, Stevens Mortuary celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. Stevens is proud to be a family-owned and operated funeral home. Stevens Mortuary is highly respected in the community for serving families in a professional and compassionate way. Following Mr. Stevens death in 1978, Mrs. Stevens has carried on the dream she and her husband shared. She has dedicated her life to helping the families who choose Stevens Mortuary.
The staff of Stevens Mortuary have been carefully chosen by Mrs. Stevens, and they share her commitment to help families during the difficult time of losing a loved oneand consider it a privilege to do so. Her sister, Mary E. Cantwell, is a funeral director/ embalmer and oversees the day-to-day business operations.
As visitors turn into the driveway at Stevens Mortuary, they might think they are approaching a beautiful plantation home. This isnt surprising because the core structure was built as a plantation home in 1833 by Col. James Scott, Jr. and his wife, Eliza Jane Ramsey Scott. Situated on five acres bordered by a creek, the setting is beautiful and serene. An especially meaningful occasion at Stevens Mortuary is the annual Easter Sunrise Service that is held on the grounds amid spring-flowering trees, bulbs, and plants.
In addition to being the home of the Col. James Scott family, it has been the residence of several prominent Knoxvillians including the Ledgerwood and Ogle families. In the 1940s, Oglewood Baptist Church bought the site and held religious services there for several years. And in the 1860s, the building was used as a makeshift hospital for the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Mr. and Mrs. Stevens moved the business to this historic location in 1961 after extensive renovation. Mrs. Stevens has furnished the building with exquisite collectibles and antique furniture including four square-grand pianos.
Stevens Mortuary offers a full range of funeral services including traditional services, military services for veterans, out-of-state arrangements, and cremation. In addition, we offer a comprehensive pre-planning program for those who want to preplan their funerals.
