Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit agency that has served the Memphis community since 1957. Chartered in the same year, our original mission was to care for dependent and neglected black children. It began as the first institution in the state of Tennessee for black dependent children.

This agency grew out a community assessed need determined, in part, by the committee of Health and Welfare Planning Council. However, Goodwill Homes was the vision of several committed and active Memphians. Included among those who helped establish the agency were The Reverend J.W. Golden, Mr. John A. Parson, The Reverend S.A. Owen, Mr. Russell Doss, The Reverend J.A. McDaniel, and Dr. Hollis Price.

In 1971, the charter was amended to include the operation of a community services agency. Over the years, Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. has made giant steps toward breaking the cycle of poverty and improving the life status for many Memphians. We deliver the most extensive social services in the southwest Memphis area. Our focus is providing innovative leadership in our programming to empower customers to become and remain self-sufficient.

This agency serves the total family, answering the community’s needs literally, from birth to old age. Through this procedure, our programs grew as the people’s needs were met. Our values include Mutual Respect for clients and others; Quality Services; Accountability; Professionalism and Efficiency.

Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc does business in accordance with the Tennessee Fair Employment Practice Law. This agency does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, handicap, or national origin and assures equal opportunity to participate in agency programs.

Our programs are funded in part by United Way, City of Memphis Division of Park Services, Shelby County Government, Aging Commission of the Mid-South, Tennessee Department of Children Services, Department of Human Services, Title XX of Social Security Act, Title III of the Older Americans Act and the Federal Government.
