Explanation of the Building Envelope
The Building Envelope consists of the materials of a building that separate it and protect it from the interior and the exterior environment. Those materials include the roof (low and steep-slope), exterior walls (structural and non-structural), insulation, fenestration (windows and metal/glass curtain walls), flooring and foundation (below-grade construction). When designed and built correctly, the envelope can minimize the gain or loss of heat and moisture and therefore reduce operation costs and increase energy efficiency.
