Portland Funeral Chapel was opened May 26, 1996 by Scott and Kathryn Pruitt Hamm. Kathryn is a third generation funeral director. Scott married into the business in 1962. At that time, the Hamms were running a funeral home in Kentucky, which they did until moving to Portland in 1996. The Hamms have two children who operate H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel in Jamestown, Kentucky.
The Hamms want to be involved -- and are involved -- in community and civic affairs. Both are members of the Portland First Baptist Church. Scott is 32nd degree Mason and is immediate past president of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and Rotary as well as a board member of the Sumner United Chambers. Kathryn is a member of the Eastern Star, past president of Portlands Kiwanis Club and the 2001 Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year.
