Whole blood donations are divided into components. So, one donation can help up to 3 people.
Transfusions - primarily red cells - are given to replace blood lost during surgery, from trauma or from internal bleeding from conditions such as aneurysms or ulcers.
Blood components such as platelets are used to treat cancer patients debilitated by chemotherapy of their ability to replace their own blood cells.
Components such as frozen plasma are used to treat patients with clotting deficiencies.
So far, no substitute for any components of human blood has been licensed for use in the United States.
